Description: A charming sampler executed entirely in whole stitches plus a few specialty stitches. The top panel features the ark afloat on stormy waters and a rainbow visible in the distance. An alphabet done in shades of blue dominates the central area. The border is composed of blocks, each of which contains a pair of animals stitched over-one.

Background Information: I've had many requests for a Noah's Ark, but until recently, could not decide how to design such a popular subject: it seemed that every approach had been done already; fresh ideas were truly in short supply. Finally, with a deadline nipping at my heels, I decided on a whole stitch format, and bright colors, and to concentrate on the animals and ark...leaving Noah to the imagination. Choosing which animals to include was challenging- I tried to pick those with unusual shapes, and interesting colorations. To appeal to the widest possible audience, I chose both domestic and wild animals from all over the world.

Stitching Comments: Since the most challenging aspect of this design is the time-consuming nature of over-one stitching, I would rate the difficulty level of this design as easy to perhaps medium. The specialty stitches are of the most basic variety, and there are no blended floss colors, making this design suitable for inexperienced stitchers who are not yet ready for complex patterns, but who want the challenge of a larger piece.

Specialty Stitches: diamond eyelet, Algerian eyelet, lazy-daisy, three-sided stitch, tacked herringbone, wrapped backstitching

Important Tips: Specialty Stitches
