Description: This nautical sampler features a "tall" ship, a novelty alphabet accented with over-one seashells, a compass, and a spyglass, all arranged within an ornate border picturing mermaids and dolphins. Executed predominantly in shades of blue, aqua and gold, this unusual sampler just may transport you to a place where the exotic tradewinds blow over the endless, restless sea... Background Information: I have always been fascinated by "tall ships"...They are not only beautiful, but are also marvels of engineering: all those sails! (Each one has a specific name, too!) Whilst researching this design, I had great difficulty in deciding how many of those sails, and how much of the rigging I could "leave out", and still depict a "clipper" ship accurately...Fascinating! And, I am awe-struck when I think that these magnificent vessels and their crews would set out across those vast ocean spaces with only the most primitive of "guidance" systems! I chose the name Tradewinds because it seems to me to embody the questing, adventurous spirit of those days when the "tall" ships were masters of the seas.
Stitching Comments: I wouldn't say there is anything especially difficult about this design; I would rate it of average difficulty. It is not very large (compared to some of my designs), has the usual quota of blends, some fractional stitches, a few simple specialty stitches, and a bit of over-one stitching. For the best results, it should be stitched on an evenweave fabric; avoid using aida. Specialty Stitches: diamond eyelet, square eyelet, diagonal satin stitch, french knot. Important
