Description: A chestnut steed with a windblown, cream-colored mane and tail wears a snowy, mauve-trimmed blanket, a richly ornamented saddle, and masses of deep green holly. The border is adorned with more holly, and snowflake motifs. Metallic threads and beads add sparkle to the design. Background Information: I have always been captivated by carousel horses, especially those carved in the highly realistic manner known as the "Philadelphia" style. The challenge for me was to capture that "frozen" movement in a series of detailed carousel horses, each representing a season of the year. "Winter" is a type of amimal known as a "stander"- a stationery animal with at least three feet touching the carousel platform. Very elaborately carved standers were usually placed on the outside rows of large carousels, while the inner rows accomodated the "jumpers"-animals that moved up and down as the carousel turned.
Stitching Comments: This is a large design, with lots of quarter stitches and backstitching. The border adds a significant amount of work to the piece; it may be omitted if desired. Specialty Stitches: Algerian eyelet Important Tips: Charting Technique, Large Designs, Organizing Floss, Miscellaneous Tips
